"To explain is to tame." The piece never really explains the pit, it keeps approaching it through increasingly impossible metaphors instead. The chandelier, the lilacs, the bruise before the blow... each image illuminates something while refusing to pin it down. By the end, I wasn't sure whether the pit was emptiness at all, or an excess of life that LANGUAGE and WORDS can only circle rather than contain.
That made me think about language more generally. We use words to preserve love, grief, longing, and all sorts of emotions, perhaps even some we can't name. Writing them down is one of the few ways we have to keep them from fading, even though we know the moment they're put into words, something of their immediacy is lost. Maybe that's simply the compromise we have to make: language can never fully contain experience, but without it so much of it slips away. Maybe the answer isn't to expect words to match the intensity of feeling and preserve it, but to stop measuring love or emotion by whether language can fully capture it.
